Master the Art of Discernment:
Lecture series on Vivekachudamani

Although the determination of the meaning of the Upanishads is referred to as “Shravana” (listening), the Upanishads themselves have accepted various processes as a means to reach the realization of Brahman. The process is essentially a method of understanding and explaining concepts. The way in which one can grasp the meaning of the Upanishads regarding the nature of Brahman, along with the structured selection of certain topics in a systematic form, can be compiled into a text.
Such a text is called a “Prakarana Grantha” (introductory or explanatory scripture). We all remain indebted to Bhagavan Shankaracharya because he not only made the knowledge of the Supreme Being accessible but also clarified many scriptures through Prakarana Granthas. In the post-Shankara period, Vedanta scholars took on this responsibility and benefited all seekers. However, the significance of Bhagavan Shankaracharya’s texts did not diminish; rather, their stature continued to grow. Though Shankara’s scriptural works were not lost in the later period, they continued to appear even more relevant over time.
Among these texts, Vivekachudamani, a profound scripture consisting of 581 verses, holds great importance. Through study, contemplation, and reflection on this text, a seeker can sharpen their understanding, strengthen their wisdom, and guide their spiritual practice in the right direction. The philosophical perspectives of Avaccheda-vada (the doctrine of limitation), Pratibimba-vada (the doctrine of reflection), and Abhasa-vada (the doctrine of appearance) are also discussed within this text. As a Prakarana Grantha, it is accessible to all seekers. Before delving into the depths of Shruti and Smriti (scriptures of revelation and tradition), internalizing these preliminary texts prepares one for a deeper comprehension of the profound teachings and stabilizes one’s self-realization.
The experience of many great saints confirms that although this text is simple in presentation, it is immensely beneficial for spiritual growth.
